The Outback Queensland Education Experience Program offers eligible Queensland primary, secondary and registered home educated students a subsidy of up to $150 for the opportunity to explore the rich history and heritage of Outback Queensland, whilst learning from and contributing to its vibrant rural communities by experiencing life on the land.
Outback Queensland includes the local government areas of Flinders, Richmond, McKinlay, Cloncurry, Mount Isa, Barcaldine, Blackall-Tambo, Longreach, Winton, Barcoo, Boulia, Diamantina, Murweh, Paroo, Quilpie, Bulloo, Croydon, Etheridge, Burke, Carpentaria, Balonne and Maranoa.

Queensland teachers and home educators are encouraged to take their students on an educational adventure through immersive learning centres that explore topics such as nature, astronomy, dinosaurs, and pioneering life in the Outback.
To claim the subsidy, the excursion itinerary must include at least one curriculum or approved learning plan-related outback experience, facilitated through a commercial outback tourism operator and delivered within Outback Queensland Education Experience Program boundaries.
Subsidy rate (overnight itinerary, total distance travelled, per student)
- Level 1: 500km to 999km = $50 (ex. GST)
- Level 2: 1,000km to 1,499km = $75 (ex. GST)
- Level 3: 1,500km to 1,999km = $100 (ex. GST)
- Level 4: 2,000km and over = $150 (ex. GST)
Applying
Applications are now open until 5pm 31 December 2029, or until all available funding has been allocated.
Subsidy and eligibility
The Program provides up to $150 per eligible student paid directly to schools and registered home educators to go towards the cost of excursions, which include an eligible outback tourism experience.
Fifty per cent of the subsidy will be paid upon approval of the school’s application and the remaining fifty per cent will be paid after receiving the completed post-trip survey and final tax invoice or valid receipt.
Where the school excursion itinerary includes both an Outback Queensland and Great Barrier Reef education experience, the school is eligible to apply for subsidies under both programs (i.e. the Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program and the Outback Queensland Education Experience Program).
Guidelines
Please refer to the Program Guidelines for further information and instruction.
